The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Nathan Nandala Mafabi addressed residents in Muhanga town council, Rukiga District, promising to revive the struggling tea industry if elected president on January 15, 2026.
The rally, on his third day in Kigezi sub-region, caused traffic disruptions as thousands of supporters turned out to hear his pledges.
Tea farmers across Kigezi, including Rukiga district, have faced challenges for nearly three years, with more than 700 tea nursery bed operators awaiting payments owed since 2012.
The prolonged government delay has left many farmers in limbo, forcing some to uproot their tea plantations.
“I want to urge you the people of Rukiga not to abandon tea farming, because if I am elected president, I will boost the sector,” Mafabi told residents, highlighting his commitment to addressing the government’s failure to support farmers.
In addition to promises for the agricultural sector, Mafabi pledged to improve the welfare of men in uniform.
“Once elected president, our men in uniform will also benefit. We shall construct for them better houses and we shall pay them good salaries,” he said.
FDC National Chairman Jack Sabiiti urged the young generation to take up leadership roles, reinforcing the party’s call for fresh governance.
After addressing residents in Muhanga town council, Mafabi proceeded to Rwamucuncu sub-county in Rukiga district. His campaign tour is scheduled to continue in Kasese district tomorrow.
